AEO vs SEO: Understanding Answer Engine Optimisation

Prism Discovery TeamPublished 5 May 20262 min read

Two disciplines, one goal

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) share a common objective: making your content discoverable. The difference is where it gets discovered.

SEO targets traditional search engines — Google, Bing, Yahoo. The goal is to rank on the first page of results. AEO targets AI-powered answer engines — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews. The goal is to be included in the generated answer.

What AEO requires that SEO does not

1. Answer-ready content structure

Search engines reward comprehensive pages. Answer engines reward content that directly answers specific questions. FAQ sections, definition boxes, and concise summaries all improve AEO performance.

2. Entity clarity

AI models work with entities — people, brands, products, concepts. Your content needs to make entity relationships explicit. Schema.org markup, consistent naming, and clear attribute descriptions help models understand what your brand is and does.

3. Multi-engine presence

SEO primarily targets Google. AEO requires visibility across multiple AI engines, each with different training data, retrieval methods, and citation behaviours.

4. Citation building

In AEO, being cited by an AI engine is the equivalent of ranking on page one. Citations come from authoritative, well-structured sources that the model's retrieval system identifies as relevant.

Where SEO and AEO overlap

The disciplines are not opposed. Good SEO practices — high-quality content, clear site structure, fast load times, authoritative backlinks — also help with AEO. The difference is that AEO adds a layer of optimisation specifically for how AI models consume and present information.

A practical AEO checklist

  1. Audit your content for answer-ready formatting (Q&A sections, definition lists, structured summaries).
  2. Implement Schema.org markup for your key entities (Organisation, Product, FAQPage, HowTo).
  3. Monitor your brand mentions across all five major AI engines.
  4. Build topical authority through content clusters, not isolated pages.
  5. Track which competitors appear in AI answers for your target queries.
  6. Update high-value content regularly to stay in training data refreshes.

The strategic view

SEO is not going away. Search engines still drive the majority of web traffic. But the share of discovery happening through AI engines is growing rapidly. Brands that treat AEO as a distinct discipline — with its own metrics, strategies, and tools — will capture attention in both channels.
